Ellie's Story
"When my daughter was diagnosed with PKU, a rare metabolic disorder, our lives shifted forever. There's no cure - only management, research and resilience."
- Veronica Gomez, Founder
What is PKU?
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited condition that affects how the body processes an amino acid called phenylalanine, which is found in most protein-containing foods. Because people with PKU are missing or have very low levels of the enzyme that breaks it down, phenylalanine can build up in the blood and brain over time. If it isn’t managed, those elevated levels can interfere with brain development and lead to learning and neurological challenges. The encouraging part is that PKU is typically identified through newborn screening, and with a carefully managed low-phenylalanine diet and regular medical support, individuals with PKU can lead full, active lives.
